Description:

A must-see tourist attractions in Phnom Penh is the National Museum of Cambodia, home to the world’s largest collection of Khmer art.

There are more than 14,000 items housed in the museum, ranging from pre-historic times through to the great Khmer Empire and beyond.

History and Architecture of the National Museum of Cambodia

The museum was opened in 1920 by King Sisowath, with George Groslier, director of Cambodian Arts, as well as the conservator of the museum, in attendance.

The museum buildings were inspired by Khmer temple-style architecture and were built between 1917 and 1924, with renovations undertaken in 1968.

During the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, the museum was abandoned and left to fall into a state of disrepair. During this period many items were lost or looted. The museum reopened in 1979.

For now, the Royal University of Fine Arts can be found adjacent to the museum and together they serve to protect and enhance the knowledge of Cambodian cultural heritage. RUFA is slated to relocate to the outskirts of the city some time soon.

The museum is a wonderful place to visit during the day and to further your knowledge of Khmer art and culture prior to a visit to the temples of Angkor.
