Khmer Rouge Prison Caves
The Khmer Rouge Prison Caves are a curious and lesser-known attraction in Kampong Cham. In fact, they’re not even well-known by the locals that live in the area. We drove around for some time asking for directions to the spot – not knowing what it even looked like.
Eventually, we found someone who knew what we were looking for and were willing to show us where it was, which happened to be just over the road.
During the Khmer Rouge period, prisoners were forced to hand-cut these caves into solid rock. Reportedly the tunnel opens out into a complex of rooms that were possibly used as prison cells. Nowadays, the tunnels are often filled with water and inaccessible, so there is not much to see. However, they still make an interesting historical stop.
