Kbal Spean

Kbal Spean, or Bridge Head, is an Angkor site close to Siem Reap, but due to its remote locations it is not as frequently visited as temples such as Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom.

History of Kbal Spean

The River of 1,000 Lingas and carvings in the riverbed at Kbal Spean is found after a 45-minute walk uphill through tree-covered hillside in Kulen mountains, about 32 kilometres north of the main temple area. It is near the location at Phnom Kulen where the first Khmer king, Jayavarman II, held a god king ceremony in 802, marking the start of the Angkor Empire.

The linga is traditionally known as the phallic symbol for Shiva in Hindu religion.

Where Is Kbal Spean?

The entrance to the temple area closes at 3pm. You can find it by continuing along the road past Banteay Srei for about 12 kilometres. The parking area and entrance to the temple is on the left as you approach.

Due to its out-of-the-way location, and considerable uphill walk, the temple complex is not a highly visited area, but in many respects this adds to its charm, especially for those who wish to experience Angkor away from the crowds.

Nearby Attractions

Although the main temples are a drive or bike ride away, you can combine a visit to Kbal Speam with the aforementioned Banteay Srei.
