East Mebon Temple, Krong Siem Reap, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, Siem Reap & Angkor
Description:

East Mebon is one of many temples in the incredible Angkor archaeological site, a few kilometres outside of the Cambodian city of Siem Reap.

History of East Mebon

The temple was built on an island in the middle of the East Baray reservoir in the 10th century by Rajendravarman. The now-dry East Baray was built about 50 years before and was the second baray to be built by ancient Khmer kings.

The temple was dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva, and was built shortly after the capital was returned to Angkor from Koh Ker by Rajendravarman VII in the year 944.

Particularly striking are the stone elephant statues. There are religious scenes, including that of the Hindu god Indra on Airavata, his three-headed elephant, as well as Shiva on sacred bull Nandi.

The approach to East Mebon is from the eastern side. What would have been a landing stage for boats now has wooden steps leading to the temple.
