Stung Treng province is located in north eastern Cambodia on the Mekong River.
The bordering province with Laos has suffered in recent years due to an improvement in the road infrastructure. Whereas in the past adventurous travellers needed to break up their journey from Kratie to Laos and its 4,000 islands in Stung Treng, now it is easy to make the trip in a day without stopping.
And this would be a pity, as the border province, as with much of provincial Cambodia, has a lot to offer those who decide to stay longer.
The town of Stung Treng itself is a pleasant place to rest a day beside the river, perhaps popping down to the market to watch how town life is unfolding for local residents.
Just to the north of Stung Treng the Koh Han Flooded Forest is an amazing site worthy of a boat trip or kayak from the town.

Where to go after enjoying Stung Treng province?
From Stung Treng you have a few options.
If you’re doing a circuit of the northeast provinces of Cambodia you can continue east to Ratanakiri or south to Kratie and its Freshwater Mekong Dolphins, depending which way you are heading.
The really adventurous can cross the Mekong to the west and take the road less travelled.
Sopheakmit Waterfall, Southeast Asia’s largest torrent of water - and one of our Best Waterfalls of Cambodia, is a perfect detour on the route to either Preah Vihear for its namesake temple, or Kampong Thom, which has its own pre-Angkorean temple of Sambor Prei Kuk.
After that you can continue your trip through Cambodia to Siem Reap and the magnificent temples of Angkor.
Whichever fork you take, ensure you consult our Cambodia Map before heading off.
