Address:
Wat Phnom, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Phnom Penh
Description:

One of the most significant religious buildings in Phnom Penh is Wat Phnom, which translates to “Mountain Pagoda”. It was built in 1372 and stands at 27 metres above ground level.

Where is Wat Phnom?

Located to the north of the city on a roundabout at the opposite end of Norodom Boulevard from Independence Monument, Wat Phnom is close to the Post Office and Riverside in the Cambodian capital.

It was the tallest religious structure in central Phnom Penh for many years. Unlike other tourist attractions in the capital, Wat Phnom has undergone some renovations in recent years with an arts and crafts centre being added to the ground floor.

Although it is considered one of the city’s major tourist attractions Wat Phnom actually holds large religious significance among Cambodians and is shrouded in mythology.

Wat Phnom

Legend of Daun Penh

Legend states that a wealthy widow name Daun Penh (whose name is now given to this area of the city) found a koki tree floating in the river. Inside the tree were four bronze Buddha statues. Taking this as a sign of good luck, she proceeded to construct a small shrine on the hill nearby. This gave birth to what is now Wat Phnom.

You will often find Cambodian’s making offerings, praying and receiving blessings at this sacred site, so remain respectful to this important piece of cultural heritage.

Nearby Attractions

The wat is in a great part of town, close to both historic Raffles Hotel Le Royal and the French Quarter around the Post Office. You can easily stroll around the area and down to Riverside or the Night Market, which is only a few minutes walk away. However, be careful of your belongings when you are at the wat as the area around the roundabout is not the safest in Phnom Penh, especially at night.
