Silk Island (Koh Dach)
Many visitors to the Cambodian capital berate the lack of things to do in Phnom Penh. While it might not compare with Bangkok or Hanoi for traditional tourists attractions, there are plenty of activities awaiting if you know where to look. One of these is taking a trip to Silk Island (Koh Dach).
The island offers the chance to experience the more provincial spirit of the Cambodian countryside, where you can see first-hand the craftsmanship that goes into Cambodian silk production.
Things to Do on Silk Island (Koh Dach)
The main tourist attraction is to see traditional Cambodian silk weavers at work. The main silk weaving centre is located just one kilometre from the ferry drop-off point. Traditional Cambodian silk kramas are probably the most favoured souvenir due to their cultural heritage, although there are a variety of items on offer.
However, part of the attraction of visiting the island is to see women working and experience their genuine warm hospitality. This is a million miles away from a trip to Russian Market.
You can also rent a small hut at Koh Dach “beach” and relax Cambodian-style with food and drink, although the beach itself is more of a place to sit by the river than a proper beach.
Getting to Silk Island (Koh Dach)
Located just across the river from Phnom Penh, the island can be reached by local ferry. There are a few organised tours that you can arrange via your accommodation or tour company. Most of the tours are reasonably priced and do not take too long.
