Sambor Prei Kuk

Cambodia is a country rich with archaeological sites, some of which predate Angkor Wat. One of these is Sambor Prei Kuk, near the town of Kampong Thom, which dates back to the 6th to 9th centuries.

This is the type of temple complex lost in the jungle, where you can really find your inner Indiana Jones. There are multiple ruins to explore and if you are looking for a genuine off-the-beaten-track adventure without the hordes or tourists that Angkor draws then this is the place for you.

There are a limited amount of guides working at the site who can give detailed information about the different ruins. Alternatively, set off on your own and get lost among all the history.

Make sure you take a sun hat, sun screen and plenty of water as the site can get hot, humid and steamy.

A Little Bit of History

The temple complex was built for King Isanavarman I as his royal capital. On the bank of the Tonle Sap, Sambor Prei Kuk can be split into three groups: the main temple Prasat Sambor; Prasat Yeah Puon, which has 22 sanctuaries (both date back to the 7th century); and the central sanctuary (Prasat Boram) which is relatively more recent having been constructed in the 9th century. It was recognised as a World Heritage Site in 2017.

Where Is Sambor Prei Kuk?

Sambor Prei Kuk is around 30km north of Kampong Thom. If you are staying in the town, then we really recommend you visit the site – any tuk tuk can take you there. Kampong Thom makes for a good stop over on your way from the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, next to Angkor.
