The northern province of Preah Vihear lies on the border with Thailand.
Angkor is not the only temple in Cambodia. The province of Preah Vihear has two temple complexes that while not rivalling Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm, can at least give them a run for their money.
The temple of Preah Vihear is a wonderful Khmer temple on the border with Thailand set in the Dângrêk Mountains. This can be undertaken as a long day-trip from Siem Reap, although you might well prefer to spend a night close to the temple. It really is magnificent.
The other temple of note is Koh Ker, a temple lost in the jungle which can more eaily be accessed from Siem Reap. But to see Preah Vihear as a province of temples is to underestimate the place.
Get off the beaten track and you will discover the real, rural Cambodia.

Where to Go after Enjoying Preah Vihear Province?
Most visitors just visit Preah Vihear on a day trip from Siem Reap to see the famous temples of Preah Vihear and Koh Ker.
If you are continuing your trip beyond Preah Vihear you could head east over the Mekong River to Stung Treng with a detour to the spectacular Sopheakmit Waterfall - one of our Best Waterfalls in Cambodia. This bridges the border with Laos.
Just south of Preah Vihear lies Kampong Thom, another place that is often just a lunch stop but is worthy of at least one night's stay to see the pre-Angkorian temples of Sambor Prei Kuk.
If you haven't yet visited Siem Reap then Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples are surely in your travel plans.
