Cambodia’s three major tourist attractions of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville have grown beyond recognition within the last few years, but believe it or not there still is another side of Cambodia to discover in places such as Kampong Thom.
Here you can experience that rural Cambodian charm and explore hidden ancient temples, such as the pre-Angkorean site of Sambor Prei Kuk, all with the scenic beauty of an evening river cruise. Check out our guide on things to do in Kampong Thom and the surrounding countryside.
The town of Kampong Thom might not be much to look at but it does make for an excellent break halfway between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh if you are travelling by road, and there are lots of artisan workships nearby for you to visit during your stay.

Where to Go after Enjoying Kampong Thom Province?
Due to its location in the heart of Cambodia, Kampong Thom is often a stopping point between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap on Highway 6.
Typically people will either continue their journey northwest to Siem Reap or southeast to the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.
If you’re heading southeast you may want to make a stop at Skun to try its famous fried tarantulas - or at least take a photograph. You can't miss your stop - just look out for the enormous spider sculpture.
Another off the beaten track option from Kampong Thom is to head northeast to the border province Stung Treng, making a detour to Koh Hang Flooded Forest and Sopheakmit Waterfall - one of the best waterfalls in Cambodia - along the way.
Another possible route is to go via Kampong Cham to Kratie to see the freshwater dolphins at Kampi Rapids.
